Historically Inaccurate Films

The recent movie “The Butler” continues to do well at the box office despite criticism from some scholars over the film’s historical inaccuracies. The movie is based on the life of Eugene Allen, an African-American butler who worked at the white house for decades. In the movie, though, there is far more drama in the butler’s personal life – including an alcoholic wife and a frequently arrested son – than the real Allen experienced. Moreover, the depiction that the butler quit in protest over Ronald Reagan’s stance on apartheid is inaccurate since Allen is known to have retired on great terms with Reagan.
